Creative community at St Luke’s

The Revered Ruth Hanlon is hoping that the new creative space offered at St Luke’s Taroona will serve and strengthen the Taroona community.
Rev’d Hanlon has had a career as a social worker, helping children and families as well as working at the other end of the spectrum in palliative care.
Rev’d Hanlon was then ordained as an Anglican minister in 2016 after spending three years as the assistant minister at St David’s Cathedral and is now the Priest in Charge at St Luke’s Taroona.
Rev’d Hanlon is excited to be at St Luke’s and loves the natural beauty of the environment and the great sense of community in Taroona.
Reverend Ruth loves to walk and meet people along the street, beach tracks and in the local cafés.
Keen to make sure the Church is serving and connecting with the people of Taroona, Rev’d Hanlon says, “It is such a creative community that we thought it would be great to engage with people in their creativity, so we began what we are calling ‘Creative Space’ in our community room at the Church.”
On Tuesday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm is the writing space, where novels, short stories, memoir, and even academic work can be created and where writers support each other in their writing endeavours.
On Thursday afternoons at the same time the community room is transformed into the art space, where painting, drawing, and any kind of craft is encouraged. The creators bring their own projects or are inspired to have a go at something new.
Friendship and support is encouraged as the participants chat over a cuppa and biscuit.
Rev’d Hanlon also hopes to engage with young families in the community and plans to begin a playgroup soon, sure there will also be many opportunities for creativity in this arena.
Anyone is welcome to come along and explore their creativity at the St Luke’s Creative Space sessions.
