Bruny Island residents will benefit from a new bus acquired by the Bruny Bowls and Community Club following a successful grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund.
Club President Mick Baille, Member for Franklin, the Honourable Nic Street MP, Member for Franklin, the Honourable David O’Byrne MP and Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter helped unveil the new community bus at Adventure Bay, Bruny Island on Friday, October 2.
Rosie Mann cut the ribbon, marking the official ‘launch’ of the community asset being ready for use.
John Peterson, from the Bruny Bowls and Community Club, said the bus is a resource which will have a positive impact on the community.
“Until now Bruny Island has had limited transport for the elderly and disadvantaged,” said Mr Peterson.
“The Bruny Bowls and Community Club recognised the need for a bus and applied for a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund.
“They were successful and with some extra financial help from a range of generous local sponsors it has become a reality.
“The bus is available for the bowlers to use, and also for local community groups such as the Country Women’s Association, RSL and others, including organised shopping trips to Kingston.
“The Bruny Bowls and Community Club is looking forward to providing confidence and independence to aged and disadvantaged groups,” concluded Mr Peterson.
The bus will be housed in a purpose-built shed at the bowls club.
Fifty guests were invited to the Bruny Bowls and Community Club for the celebrations, including Mr Street, Mr O’Byrne and Mayor Winter.
